The World's Oldest Gold Jewelry Isn't From Egypt

Ask most people which civilization made the first gold jewelry, and they'll say Egypt. It's a reasonable guess — and it's wrong by about a thousand years.

A Necropolis in Bulgaria

In 1972, an excavator operator working near the Bulgarian city of Varna uncovered a burial ground that would rewrite the timeline of gold jewelry entirely. The Varna Necropolis, dated to roughly 4600–4200 BCE, contained thousands of gold objects — beads, bracelets, and ornamental pieces — buried alongside members of the Varna culture, a Chalcolithic (Copper Age) society that predates both the Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilizations typically credited with "inventing" gold jewelry.

Older Than the Pyramids, By a Lot

To put the timeline in perspective: the Great Pyramid of Giza was built around 2560 BCE. The gold jewelry at Varna predates it by roughly 2,000 years — and predates Egypt and Sumer's earliest gold work by close to a millennium. It's currently considered the oldest processed gold in the world.

Why Egypt Gets the Credit Anyway

Varna's gold work, while genuinely older, was more limited in scale and technique than what followed in Egypt and Mesopotamia. Egypt's association with gold is also simply better documented and more visually iconic — golden pharaoh masks tend to stick in cultural memory more than Copper Age beads from a lesser-known Balkan site. But the archaeological record is clear: gold jewelry's true origin point sits quietly outside the empires we usually credit.

A Longer Story Than Most People Realize

It's a good reminder that the human relationship with gold jewelry runs even deeper than the ancient civilizations we usually associate it with — nearly 6,600 years and counting, with solid gold still holding the same appeal it had at a Copper Age burial site in Bulgaria.

See where that appeal lands today in our full jewelry collection.
