Why Does Jewelry Turn Your Skin Green?

If a ring or necklace has ever left a green or black mark on your skin, you've experienced one of the most common — and most misunderstood — jewelry complaints. Here's what's actually happening, and why it's not really about "sensitive skin" the way most people assume.

It's Not an Allergy — It's Chemistry

That green tint is usually a reaction between metal and skin, not an allergic response. Base metals like copper — commonly used in cheaper jewelry alloys and in the layer beneath gold plating — react with sweat, oils, and acids on your skin to form copper salts, which appear as a greenish residue. It happens to almost everyone under the right conditions; it's not a sign your skin is unusually sensitive.

Why Plated Jewelry Is the Usual Culprit

Gold-plated jewelry is a thin layer of gold over a base metal — often brass or copper. That plating wears thin with regular contact, sweat, and friction, exposing the reactive metal underneath. Once that happens, you get the green mark, even though the piece still "looks gold" from a distance.

Where Solid Gold Is Different

Solid 10K, 14K, or 18K gold has no base metal hiding underneath a coating — the gold is mixed all the way through the alloy. There's nothing to wear through to. This is also why solid gold is considered hypoallergenic for most people: true metal allergies are almost always a reaction to nickel, and reputable solid gold jewelry (like ours) is cast nickel-free, so there's no common allergen present in the first place.

A Quick Way to Check What You Own

If a piece has ever left a green mark, it's plated — no exceptions. If you're unsure whether something is solid gold, check for a karat hallmark stamp (10K, 14K, 18K) struck into the metal itself; plated jewelry won't carry one, since there's no purity to certify.

Every VIECLAT piece is solid gold, nickel-free, and hallmark-stamped. Read more in our Materials guide, or browse the full collection.
