How to Clean and Care for Solid Gold Jewelry

Solid gold doesn't need much — but it does need the right kind of care. Unlike plated jewelry, solid gold won't wear through to a base metal underneath, so you're not racing against time to protect a coating. What you're protecting is its shine, and that's mostly a matter of avoiding a few everyday habits that dull it faster than they should.

The 2-Minute At-Home Clean

You don't need a jeweler for routine cleaning. Here's what actually works:

  • Fill a small bowl with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap.
  • Soak your piece for 10–15 minutes to loosen oils, lotion, and everyday buildup.
  • Gently brush with a soft-bristled brush (a clean, soft toothbrush works well) — pay extra attention to settings where dust collects behind stones.
  • Rinse under warm running water and pat dry immediately with a lint-free cloth.

For pieces with cubic zirconia stones, like our Pavé Circle Bracelet or Wave Bangle Bracelet, this same routine works — just make sure the piece is fully dry before storing, since trapped moisture is what causes buildup around a setting over time.

What to Avoid

Solid gold is durable, but a few things will dull or damage it faster than normal wear:

  • Chlorine. Pools and hot tubs are the biggest risk — chlorine can weaken gold alloys over time and pit the surface. Take jewelry off before swimming.
  • Perfume and lotion contact. Applying these directly onto jewelry (rather than letting them dry on skin first) leaves a filmy residue that dulls shine.
  • Harsh chemicals. Cleaning products, chlorine-based bleach, and abrasive polishes can scratch or discolor gold — stick to mild soap and water.
  • Ultrasonic cleaners at home. These are fine for solid gold without stones, but can loosen pavé or prong-set stones over time — better left to a professional.

Storing It Right

How you store your jewelry between wears matters as much as how you clean it:

  • Store pieces separately — gold is soft enough to scratch against other gold, and stones can chip other pieces in a jewelry pile.
  • Use a soft pouch or lined jewelry box rather than an open dish, which exposes pieces to dust and air.
  • Bangles and bracelets, like our Domed Bangle Bracelet or Pendant Halo Bangle Bracelet, do best hung or laid flat rather than stacked, which helps hinges and clasps keep their shape.

Can You Wear It Every Day?

Yes — that's exactly what solid gold is built for. Unlike gold-plated pieces, there's no coating to wear through, so daily wear won't expose a different metal underneath. The routine above is really about keeping the shine, not preventing damage. A quick soap-and-water clean every few weeks is enough to keep any VIECLAT piece looking the way it did the day it arrived.
